Sketches

We went to the Houston Symphony outdoor concert last Friday night, and there was quite the plethora of unsuspecting people to choose from for sketches during intermission:

Then these are just two little warm-up digital paint sketches from today. A crane that looks part duck, oops, and a lady selling 'Cocos Frios' like you often see on street corners around here in Houston:

Watercolor Flowerbed

A sketch from last week. I know it's not spring in a lot of places yet, but it is here. There's even wisteria blooming out by this flowerbed.

Happy Late Valentine's Day or My Favorite Fezzik-Related Quote

If you've only ever seen the movie, well, you're missing out. The Princess Bride by William Goldman is the reason the movie exists.

Let's have some sad 'the circus of life has passed me by' music to top this post off!

Old Rose Ink Sketch

Sketching with Mr. Flynn

The top one came about while watching some Errol Flynn movie, and the bottom one was the shifty little sidekick, or would have been if they had thought to put her in the escaping-the-dungeon scene. She's wicked quiet, even in wooden shoes.

Dr. Snappy Comes For a Visit

"Sure, he looked a little funny, but when he said 'Alright. Let's take the pulse now,' and began counting back from 27 by 3's, I was sure mom had called for the wrong doctor. I mean, when I played doctor I could sound less phony than this guy, and I was only 6."

As Seen at HEB

Saw both of these ladies near the checkout at two different HEB stores this last week. I covet the second lady's hair.

Saw This Morning

Seen during my morning constitutional and from the art desk window. The first lady was looking for something and the second one was in her pj's taking her little girl to the preschool next door. That kid had the best colored bear.

Argyle Sock Club: Challenge no. 5!

Ah, all of you who are so nice as to come visit me here will be pleased that the content is distinctly improving over time.

I bring you: Harry Codfish!

To find out just what this is all about, you had better go on over to the illustrious Argyle Sock Club blog, right here.

Pablo & the Llamas

They had always enjoyed a good practical joke, and sneaking up, then collectively shouting "PUMA IN THE HERD!" was a source of hilarity which never grew old.

Seen at Walmart

I saw these two while picking up some things today, and especially liked the old man with the striped shirt, striped ball, on the off-handedly striped bench with the grumpy expression. The scowl was probably to ward off anyone from supposing he was buying the ball for himself. I know I'm always tempted to buy them every summer.

Carry Switcheroo

"Now this is the way to go." thought Elephant. "You can really see the country from up here." Out loud, to the little raja, he said, "Quit grinding your teeth and muttering to yourself. It's spoiling the view."

Not Sure What to Call This One

This is based off a "zoomorphic askos with antlers" from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
I think he's out for his afternoon float around the woods on some nice island near Cyprus, humming to himself...

Independence Day Cherries

(10 points to Gryffindor if you get the "Bing!")

Marbles / I Heart Moleskine

If this were a story, these kids would be dodging Saturday chores to play for a while.
I'm loving the panoramic layout of the Moleskine watercolor sketchbook. Good paper too; doesn't buckle much and it's nice and 'toothy' for pen and ink.

Sketch "Chanson de Matin"

Sketch of an idea for an illustration of "Chanson de Matin" by Edward Elgar.
There are many variations played out there but this piano solo fits well:
