Handcar Chase!

Handcar chase with Navajo kid and ringtail cat in aviator hat in movie-land 'Texas,' [cough], which somehow always looks like Monument Valley...

"There may be a fortune waiting, or maybe an egg souffle..."

The Argyle Sock Club Challenge no. 15 was to pick out a favorite song and to make 2-4 spot illustrations for it, so I picked "Meet the Sun Halfway."

And although Bing Crosby sang it first and was quite the crooner, I personally think Tiny Tim and his ukulele do it best:

Sketches

We went to the Houston Symphony outdoor concert last Friday night, and there was quite the plethora of unsuspecting people to choose from for sketches during intermission:

Then these are just two little warm-up digital paint sketches from today. A crane that looks part duck, oops, and a lady selling 'Cocos Frios' like you often see on street corners around here in Houston:

Crayon Sketches

Just the usual post combo of HaHa Bird, abstract impressionism on the walls, and an office parrot. I found a chunk of crayon on the floor at church and have been warming up with it lately.

The Magic Carrot

[Note: That's not God shouting down, in case you're wondering. No, it's the Genie of the Carrot yelling back over his shoulder after being freed by our absent-minded heroine. Don't ask how he got there in the first place. It would ruin the story.]

Dr. Snappy Comes For a Visit

"Sure, he looked a little funny, but when he said 'Alright. Let's take the pulse now,' and began counting back from 27 by 3's, I was sure mom had called for the wrong doctor. I mean, when I played doctor I could sound less phony than this guy, and I was only 6."

Saw This Morning

Seen during my morning constitutional and from the art desk window. The first lady was looking for something and the second one was in her pj's taking her little girl to the preschool next door. That kid had the best colored bear.

Sakti & the Wayang Golek

I posted a detail from this spread a few weeks ago (link here) and here are the finished spreads, sans the story text.

Snowshoe Hare

A detail from a bigger illustration finished a few months ago.

Carry Switcheroo

"Now this is the way to go." thought Elephant. "You can really see the country from up here." Out loud, to the little raja, he said, "Quit grinding your teeth and muttering to yourself. It's spoiling the view."

Sakti and the Wayang Golek

Here's a spot illustration from what I've been working on this week. Sakti, main character, runs into an old family problem centered around a traditionally carved wooden puppet (the wayang golek), all set in East Java in Indonesia. More to come.

Independence Day Cherries

(10 points to Gryffindor if you get the "Bing!")

Flying Terrier

Of the 6-legged sort. Caterpillar stage up soon.

Story a Day no.10

"So...you grant wishes?"   "Something like that kid. I'm busy right now. Go away."

Story a Day no. 9

"We waited and waited all day for that donkey to come, but he never did show his face." Merna Wilks, 1892
